Put a shimmy in your fitness routine!

A fitness routine is often a means to an end for many women – it’s one of the ways we achieve the body we’re pretty much happy with, but it can be something we feel we need to do, rather than actually want to do.
If that’s the case for you, may I suggest you join a burlesque class and add a bit of sparkle to your fitness routine? Your body image and self-confidence will love you for it – I promise.
So what is burlesque and how can you incorporate it into your fitness routine? Put simply, burlesque is the “art of the tease.” It’s sophisticated, seductive and sexy – but best of all, its lots of fun. Burlesque has enjoyed a huge revival in recent years due largely to international burlesque superstars like Dita Von Teese. New Zealand’s burlesque scene is alive and kicking and classes can be found in most main centres.
Michelle Parish (aka Ms Tittle Tattle) is a leading proponent of Glamilton’s vibrant burlesque scene and is the owner/head mistress at Bombshell Burlesque. “A good burlesque class is not really about learning dance moves and banging out a routine.” says Michelle.“Although we inevitably teach some dance moves, a good class to me is all about teaching women to tap into their “inner burlesque starlet” - it’s about learning to work your curves and angles and to feel comfortable and sexy in your own skin.”
While burlesque is not necessarily going to do wonders for your cardiovascular fitness, it does offer a myriad of fitness benefits that make it a valuable addition to your routine. Burlesque focuses on core strength, balance, good posture and poise. In a way, it takes advantage of all the benefits you’ve earned from your standard fitness routine and teaches you to “showcase” them in a way that makes you feel confident and sassy – and what woman doesn’t want to feel like that?
Karen’s top 5 tips for burlesque dancing
1.      Wear comfortable heels – ultra-high heels may look glamorous, but they’re not practical for sassy strutting!
2.      Dress up – although it’s not compulsory, a combination of red lipstick and high heels can REALLY make your day.
3.      Have an open mind – burlesque may initially challenge your comfort zone, but before you know it you’ll be shimmying with the best of them!
4.      Embrace the experience – a burlesque class is a fun, non-judgemental environment in which to release your inner vamp.
5.      Beware … serious boost in self-esteem ahead!
