How Podcasts can Help Grow your Business

podcastweb

Nat and Jacqui, co-hosts of the popular helpful and hilarious Parenting Podcast ‘If Only They’d Told Me’, give you the real deal on Podcasting and how business owners can use podcasts to drive their business.

Being Interviewed on or Sponsoring a Podcast

Business owners can use podcasts to drive business via being an interviewee or sponsoring a podcast. Being interviewed for a podcast is such a unique way to ‘tell your story’ and people genuinely are interested in the person behind the business. Rather than always hearing your polished tagline, it’s refreshing for them to hear your ‘why’ (why you do what you do) and what the business hopes to achieve.

Another option for a business owner if they don’t feel comfortable talking about their business is to do a sponsored podcast whereby an audio ad gets read aloud at the start of the podcast. “This episode of If Only They’d Told Me parenting podcast is brought to you by …”

Nat hosts a business podcast called ‘Go to Girl’ which is all about making Social Media and Networking ‘easy, fun and fabulous!’ She interviews small business owners about various topics related to their product and service, and the joys and challenges of running a business. Again, this is a huge point of difference for her and this podcast is also on the What’s Hot list in iTunes in the Business section.

Hosting a Podcast

Nat’s thoughts:

Jacqui and I both love to talk and give our opinion as well as interview people about theirs so podcasting was a fabulous fit for us! We intentionally ‘mix it up’ and take turns at interviewing experts and parents as well as podcasting together. Jacqui is the ‘neat-freak full time working mum of two’ and I’m the ‘hectic but happy at-home mum of three’ so we have a good cross-section of views and experiences to offer.

Jacqui’s thoughts:

I have to admit, I was initially dubious about how much value we would get out of it and how much we could realistically talk about our key subject – parenting, babies and relationships. What blew me away was the incredible response we got from not only the audience but from the podcast ‘hosts’ ourselves. People respond really well to the honesty with which we talk and the fact that we just chat as though we are sitting on the sofa having a cuppa.

Tips for hosting or being interviewed for a podcast:

1. Know your subject

2. Be yourself – people can tell if you are trying to be something you are not.

3. Know why you’re doing it – what is the purpose of it. For us, it is all about: 1. To drive people to our website 2. Drive people to buy our book 3. To provide helpful advice, information to parents who need it, and to show mums and dads out there that they are not alone and there is stuff they can do to make things less difficult.
