With winter rolling on in, it is easy to fall into the daily routine of blacks, greys and other monochrome sanctums that require little effort, but ensure you appear adept in your workplace.

Before you break out the yellow and purple ensemble that you just knew would make a comeback, you must first identify which colours mix well and which should be kept at least a rainbow’s length apart.

A few basic rules you should try to abide by when becoming familiar with the colour palette:

• Balance out your figure with colour. If you’re going to wear an electric blue blouse, tone it down with a pair of black pants or skirt.

• Black and white are not considered colours which means they go with anything. Neutral grey can also be teamed with most colours.

• Always go for darker colours on your bottom half and bright colours on top. Light colours tend to make your bottom half appear larger, while on top they brighten up your face.

• If a fuchsia blouse and cream trouser combo scares you, take baby steps and try a funky pair of green shoes or other colourful accessories.

• Colours command attention and shouldn't be worn by anyone who wants to blend in with the crowd.
